Trust? What happened to it?

Merry Christmas from Percy Chattey BooksThe Rain in Spain…

It’s December and we are in an usual deluge of rain here on the Costa Blanca. The Spanish Weather office have issued “amber warnings” for severe weather and record levels of rain for the next few days. Yuk! Last night was exciting with the rain hammering on the roof and Meg, our guard dog, scared out of her wits and jumping on the bed for comfort, not because of the rain but because one of the smoke alarms was issuing regular beeps to tell the world – that is our world – that the battery was running low. I do not know why our little lady does not like beeping noises, it must be something in her past as they drive her into a bundle of trembling fear.

Christmas Squeeze and Batteries

We are all aware of the barons that control our lives through holding the reins on the conglomerates that sell us everything from Christmas chocolate tins, which every year stay the same price but shrink in size, to cornflake packets which stay the same size but the produce inside only comes half way up the container. We have a heavy use of ‘AA’ and ‘AAA’ batteries and when I saw rechargeable ones at half price all eight beautifully wrap on a card in a store I was happy to buy them. The months have gone by and there was a need to open the packet to insert one of them into a holder, that is when I discovered why they were cheap as they are slightly over size for a double ‘A’ battery.

It seems now there is very little one can trust. Stores determined to squeeze every penny they can out of a transaction and if that upsets a customer then it does not matter as in most cases they have the monopoly so you have a need to go back. Perhaps that statement is a bit strong but it appears to me customer services have declined.

The Trust has Gone

Trust! What happened to it? It was not long ago, alright fifty years, when you could leave your front door open or the keys in the ignition of the car with the confident knowledge nothing would happen to either. People helped each other and there was always a warm welcome for a stranger. I think the decline first started when the Government, I’ll let you guess of what colour, decided its duty to the populace could be modified and not all people were equal under the law. It was the mid sixties and the requirement to wear a helmet while riding a motorcycle became a firm rule.

However after an outcry from turban wearing Sikhs the law was changed so it did not apply to them, perhaps that is where other religious requirements outside common law have been allowed as it set a precedent.

In the late nineteen hundreds the worst single item in my mind for teaching children to cheat, lie and steal was when the famous Walkers Crisp Company constantly ran an advert on Television of a famous footballer sitting at a table and stealing crisps off a child. How or why that was allowed I do not understand, but I firmly believe it in itself was detrimental to teaching the young how to behave, as if stealing was a common act and a joke.

It’ll Soon Get Lighter

A few more days and the shortest day of the year will have been and gone and the evenings start to get lighter. We are looking forward to a busy year with two new novels out and Casa FuenteLargo looking great in the sun. Happy Christmas to everyone http://www.percychatteybooks.com If you like the blog please share.

Blog: Guard Dog!!

Authors: We need your short storyGuard Dog!! I would bet the vision that has come to mind is an Alsatian, a Doberman or something similar snarling and showing its teeth whilst straining at a chain daring an intruder to go near it. Let me introduce Meg, a darling little black and white little lady about the size of a Jack Russell, our Guard Dog! I would not say she is lazy but she does things very differently, not for her snarling and running up and down – no she sits on the settee and studies the CCTV monitors, and if anyone comes in sight then she barks even before they have got to the door bell.

Democracy

I see there is another Top of the Bill Show on in London, this time held at the Law Courts, mind you it is only on for four days, with a sequel in January. I understand if you can get in to see the activities there is no charge although you may be frisked for any concealed weapons. The eleven stars of the show are well paid in any case by you and me, they are there on some charade pretending they are part of a democracy which most people are starting to doubt exists. What is the point of having a General Election and giving Parliament the power to run the country, followed by a referendum which Members of the Government had agreed it would implement the result, when that can be ignored and overturned by a group of unelected ‘Judges’ who have been given power by an equally unelected Quango? To me it all seems a lot like jobs for the boys and girls and any excuse to sit in judgement. It should never have happened especially as it is at our expense.

The Dauntless Factor

pcbdoublebookbuynow“The Dauntless Factor “(a thriller book) is available on-line…

This exciting novel: ‘The Dauntless Factor’ by Percy W. Chattey is an easy read thriller of suspense and anticipation. It is set at a time when cars were an unusual sight. He tells the continuing story of the O’Dowd family who had emigrated from Ireland to escape the potato famine in the eighteen hundreds to discover their fortune in North East England.

It is now the start of the 1900’s and we learn of Katherine, the American girl, who comes to England to find love with all its twists and turns. There is also Sir Patrick, the Chief Executive of the Dauntless Motor Works, who with the help of his son Robert, built it up from nothing. Both are respected people in the community of Liverpool, however dark events which happened in the past, are suddenly brought to the fore.

Plus, another thriller of mine is just being re-published as “A Common’s Mistake” (formally ‘Politically Incorrect’)….

All my books are available on-line via Amazon and (soon) Smashwords… just search for “Percy Chattey Books” on Google.

Brexit. Now a different ball game

guy fawkesIn my view the decision by the Law Lords in the High Court to rule that Parliament and its members must have a say on implementing the desire of the British People (ref BREXIT), whether to leave the European Union or not, makes it an entirely different ball game.

It is no longer a matter of is it acceptably to be in or out of the EU, but it is now the case of have the British people the privilege to inform their leaders, by a majority vote on their requirements of who controls the future of the United Kingdom. No matter what one’s opinion, whether to stay in or out, is it right that a few members of the courts have the privilege to take it on themselves to override the will of the mainstream of the people. If that is so democracy died this day 3rd November 2016.

With other recent subtle changes to the law it is another step to dictatorship and over eight hundred years of the people’s civil rights have been carelessly put aside. It is possible to argue that Members of Parliament have a right to vote as they see fit. However they are there by popular agreement to respect the views of the populace and not to promote their own personal interest.

Very strange that this should happen two days before the celebrations of Guy Fawkes night on the fifth when four hundred and eleven years ago this man tried to destroy Westminster the Mother of all Parliaments. http://www.percychatteybooks.com

The rich get richer and the poor get poorer!

Richer or PoorerThe rich get richer and the poor get poorer! An old saying but truer today than ever before. The people lost the plot back in the seventies when it appears they were lied to by the then UK Prime Minister who took the country into a Common Market aware at the time it was the corner stone for the development of the European Super State.

In the period since that momentous event Brussels has destroyed competition and allowed large corporations to control what we buy and at what price and if the reports we read in the newspapers are true, they have managed to escape through some complicated system from paying taxes. The people this has affected most are the ones on the lower level of income, especially the elderly whose annual state pension in value is less than pocket money for the wealthy, and the yearly increase does not keep up with real inflation.

I wonder if June twenty third (BREXIT) will be the turning point it was when the people in the street came to realise how he and she are being cheated by Government and the conglomerates who take away a little piece at a time from their standard of living. I do hope that Theresa May and her Ministers have the ability to turn all this around, but somehow I doubt it as there are powerful forces at work to stop her.  http://www.percychatteybooks.com
